In connection with the art monument "Stolpersteine" we would like to digitally support the culture of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism. For this we use and compile publicly available data from the online encyclopedia Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap. The personal stories and destinies are thus made accessible directly in the places in Germany where they were written. There are more than 20,000 stumbling blocks in the app right from the start. We will add more on a regular basis.
Stolpersteine Deutschland is largely barrier-free and can be used by people with severe visual impairments and limited motor skills. The app was realized by us on our own initiative without tax and donation money.
The largest decentralized memorial in the world
"A person is only forgotten when his name is forgotten," quotes Gunter Demnig from the Talmud.
To commemorate the victims of the Nazi era, the artist has placed small brass commemorative plaques on the pavement in front of their last self-chosen living or creative space. Demnig started with a first stumbling block in 1992, meanwhile there are more than 80,000 in over 1,000 German municipalities and 21 countries. The art project is considered the largest decentralized memorial in the world and focuses on the people who were persecuted, murdered, deported or expelled during the Nazi regime.
