João Ferreira Annes d'Almeida was an important personality of Portuguese Protestantism, especially known for translating the Bible into Portuguese.

Son of Catholic parents, João Almeida was born in Tavares tower location in Portugal. She traveled to Holland and, at 14, embarked for Asia, through Batavia, on Java island, Indonesia. At that time, Batavia was the administrative center of the Dutch East India Company in Southeast Asia.

In 1642 he converted to the Dutch Reformed Church, and devoted himself immediately to the translation of excerpts from the Gospels from Spanish into Portuguese.
